Excerpts from the American Academy of Ozonotherapy website:
Prolozone Therapy, not to be confused with Prolotherapy, is an injection technique that uses collagen producing substances and ozone gas to reconstruct damaged or weakened connective tissue in and around joints. The use of ozone causes the joint to heal much more quickly than in traditional Prolotherapy. While Prolotherapy stimulates an inflammatory reaction and is very painful, Prolozone is anti-inflammatory and is not nearly as painful. Prolozone works so well because ozone is a highly reactive molecule, and when injected into a joint capsule it is able to stimulate the fibroblast that are needed for joint repair, and dissolve scar tissue.
It is excellent for all forms of musculo-skeletal and joint pain including chronic neck and back pain, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative and arthritic hips and knees, degenerated discs, and shoulder and elbow pain. In many cases Prolozone actually corrects the pathology causing the disorder. Prolozone is very effective with approximately 75% of chronic pain sufferers becoming permanently pain free. Those that are not pain free often have a significant reduction in pain which can make life more tolerable.
When ligaments and tendons become weak or injured they may not heal back to their original length or strength, and often heal with scar tissue. This is largely due to the poor blood supply to ligaments and tendons, and therefore healing is slow and not always complete. To further complicate this, ligaments also have many nerve endings, and therefore the person will feel pain at the areas where the ligaments are damaged or loose.
If we are athletic, or if we are just getting older, there is some gradual and natural degeneration of the moving parts of the body due to ongoing recurrent mechanical stress, and failure of tissues to repair.
Prolozone stimulates the repair and tightening of the lax structures, partially torn connective tissue and ligaments. Prolozone halts the inflammation cycle allowing for better circulation, increased blood flow, and hydration of the damaged tissues. This creates a healing environment within the joint and results in increased range of motion and decreased pain. While the Prolozone procedure has amazing results when used alone, the addition of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) enhances the repair and regeneration of torn and degenerated tissues by using the bodies own regeneration cells.
Platelet rich plasma contains stem cells, as well as, growth factors and bioactive proteins. PRP works very well with Prolozone and can enhance the healing of torn tendons, ligaments, and torn or eroded cartilage.
